Let's talk movies...

Urban fantasy settings - city streets paved with danger and surrounded by shadow - seem to translate really well to the big screen. I'd love to know what some of your favourites are. Here are a few that have made an impression on me...

Interview with the Vampire - (picture on the left)- loved the book and was pleasantly surprised by the film. Liked Tom Cruise as Lestat, although Brad Pitt as Louis just didn't work at all for me!

Queen of the Damned, also from an Anne Rice book, I remember enjoying at the time, although now I can't really recall anything about it!

Dark City. I haven't ever seen this listed as Urban Fantasy - it's really science fiction, I suppose - but it's in a city and for me it has that atmosphere about it. Love it (and Rufus Sewell!) to bits! And incidentally it was the first DVD we ever bought :). I particularly liked the scene pictured on the right, with his reflection in the prison glass dividing them.

Blade. (Pictured at the top). I quite liked looking at this one, although the fight scenes seemed very Matrix-y. Definite ass-kicking :).

Then there are those based on comic book characters like the Batman films which surely count as urban fantasy - they're definitely fun!

Other examples might be Blood and Chocolate, Underworld (on the left) and Underworld: Evolution, An American Werewolf in London, The Craft, City of Angels...

What urban fantasy films do you love or hate, and why?

  1. How about The Sorcerer's Apprentice? It's the most recent that I've seen. I also liked Push.

  2. Oh yes, I forgot about those! I tried to talk my kids into going to see the Sorceror's Apprentice because it looked such fun, but they wouldn't play :(.

    Thanks, Cindy!

  3. I loved Dark City...I don't consider eithr of the Anne Rice books Urban Fantasy...they are too dark and don't really meet tradtitional urban fantasy criteria....but I do love the Blade and Underworld movies...I didn't really care for Blood and Chocolate but it is definitely Urban Fantasy....I also loved "The Covenant". It's actually easier to find Urban Fantasy on TV...
